Check Your Heart

Matthew 6:1 NLT

“Watch out! Don’t do your good deeds publicly, to be admired by others, for you will lose the reward from your Father in heaven.”

Spiritual discipline is not about looking spiritual in front of other people. It is about what is happening in your heart when nobody else sees it.

This is behind-closed-doors discipline. It is doing what is right when nobody sees it. It is your integrity, your character, and your personal walk with God.

Everybody thinks of changing others, and nobody thinks of changing himself.

It is easy to look at what needs to change around us. It is easy to see what another person should do differently. But spiritual discipline brings us back to our own heart.

Check your heart in every situation.

The things we do in private affect how we live in public. If your character does not back up what you speak, something is going to break at some point. But when you allow God to work deeply in your heart, what comes out of your life begins to change.

Fruit that remains comes from roots that are deep.

Spiritual discipline is not about instant results. It is a daily, moment-by-moment walk with God that builds something lasting on the inside of you.

Here’s a challenge for you today:

Before you focus on what needs to change around you, check your own heart. Ask God to show you anything that needs to be adjusted and be willing to let Him do the deep work that produces lasting fruit.
